# Screencap v1.2: cloud uploads, sharing, and public viewer

*Product update · May 24, 2026*

Today we shipped the biggest update yet: cloud uploads and sharing. Screencap is still local-first and completely free, but now you can optionally sign in with Google to upload screenshots and share them with anyone via a link.

## What shipped

- **Cloud uploads:** sign in with Google, upload screenshots, and get a short, unguessable share link. Images are stored on private infrastructure with a 1 GB quota per user.
- **Public viewer page:** every shared screenshot gets a dark-themed page with fullscreen zoom, copy-to-clipboard, and social media preview tags.
- **Files tab in popup:** browse, search, and scroll through uploaded screenshots. Click any file to open its viewer page in a new tab.
- **Edit in Screencap bridge:** as the author of a shared screenshot, click "Edit" from the viewer page to reopen it in the extension editor for re-annotation.
- **Upload preferences:** choose whether uploads automatically open the shared link in a new tab from the extension settings.
- **Crop reliability fix:** the crop tool no longer cancels when the mouse leaves the canvas during a drag.

## How sharing works

Upload a screenshot and the extension generates a link such as `https://files.screencap.app/abc123def456`. Share it in Slack, Discord, email, or anywhere else. The viewer page supports fullscreen image zoom, one-click copy to clipboard, and social previews. Only you, the uploader, can edit or delete the screenshot. Anyone with the link can view it without an account.

## Privacy and architecture notes

All local editing and OCR remains fully offline. Nothing leaves your device unless you explicitly upload. Cloud uploads use Google OAuth and private, isolated infrastructure. Shared links use random, unguessable IDs. There is no public gallery and no way to discover shared screenshots without the link.
