Product update · v1.3

Mark up screenshots right on the page

Until now, Select Area worked in two steps. You dragged a region, and then you marked it up in a separate editor tab. In Screencap 1.3, the editor opens on the page itself. You select, draw, and copy without leaving the tab.

A dashboard screenshot marked up in the in-page editor with numbered steps, a spotlight and a red arrow with a text label
Exported from the in-page editor: numbered steps, a spotlight, an arrow and a text label.

How it works

  1. Press Alt+Shift+A, or click the toolbar icon and choose Select Area. Screencap freezes the visible tab, so menus and animations stay where they are.
  2. Drag over the part you want. A label shows the size in pixels. Drag the handles to resize, or press the arrow keys to move the selection 1 px at a time (10 px with Shift).
  3. Pick a tool and draw on the selection. Tools and actions appear next to it.
  4. Press Enter to copy the result to the clipboard and close the editor. Press Ctrl+S to save it as a PNG.

Press Esc at any time to cancel. While the editor is open, your keystrokes and scrolling don't reach the page underneath.

One key per tool

Key Tool
M Adjust the selection
V Select, move and resize annotations
R Rectangle
A Arrow
L Line
P Pen
H Highlighter (hold Shift to keep it straight)
T Text
N Numbered steps: each click adds the next number
S Spotlight: dims everything outside the boxes you draw
X Pixelate
B Blur

Six colors and three stroke widths sit in the same toolbar. Ctrl+Z undoes and Ctrl+Y redoes. Delete removes the selected annotation. If you delete a numbered step, the other steps renumber.

When it doesn't open

Chrome doesn't let extensions run on some pages: chrome:// pages, the Chrome Web Store, and the built-in PDF viewer. On those pages Screencap can't open the editor.

If Alt+Shift+A does nothing, another extension may use the same shortcut. Open chrome://extensions/shortcuts and set a different one.
